Schuler Cues offers two standard bumper assemblies. The 20 gram (or .7oz) bumper which has 4 plastic washers and two rubber o-rings and the 40 gram (or 1.4oz) bumper which has 6 metal washers and 2 rubber o-rings.
How to remove the Schuler bumper
Using a 5/32 L shaped hex key loosen hex bolt counterclockwise following the illustration.
How to install the Schuler bumper
Reverse the procedure by pressing the bumper evenly against lip of butt plate. Lightly tap butt of the cue on the ground to insure in evenly in place. Using the 5/32 hex wrench tighten hex bolt clockwise, make sure you are holding the butt per illustration.
Adjusting the bumper assembly
If you wish to further adjust the Schuler bumper assembly some where in-between 20 and 40 grams by simply removing metal washers or replacing metal washers with plastic washers. Every metal washer weighs 4 grams.
Heat and humidity
Always protect your cue from extreme environmental conditions-heat, cold, humidity or excessive dryness. Hot dry air from forced air furnaces may be the single biggest cause of warped cues. Never leave your cue near or on heating vents. Also avoid storing your cue in a damp basement or in the trunk of your car. When bringing your cue from the cold into a warm room, put it together, but don’t tighten it up immediately. Warm up the areas around the butt and the ferrule joints with your hands. Tighten the joints when they have reached room temperature (about 5-10 minutes).
A good coat of quality wax is your best protection against moisture for your shaft. Always store your cue in a case. Hard cases will provide the best protection and the most security. Soft case are fine for storing flat.
Cleaning
Do not use silicone based products or abrasive materials to clean your shafts. Clean the shaft sparingly with damp paper towel and dry immediately and buff lightly with soft flannel or cotton cloth (soft diapers do fine). Use available burninshing papers to polish shafts. Avoid sandpaper. Apply water drops on dings and burnish after wood swells.
If your cue is dressed with ivory ferrules, ivory joint or butt cap, you must exercise preventative care. Ivory is a precious and extremely tough material, but it is susceptible to cracking or chipping with misuse. Ivory ferrules should be brought to room temperature before use (warm with your hand). Ivory butt caps will fracture when slammed on the floor forcing the rubber bumper to compress and fracture the butt cap. Every six months apply a small amount of baby oil to the ivory ferrules to add moisture.
